Winter Tyres Reviewed

More information on Winter Tyres

This May we were given the chance to go to Tamworth's Snowdome and witness the experience of Winter tyres being put through their paces. From this trip we have understood that Winter tyres are going to be the way forward as soon as the temperature drops below 7 degrees. It doesn't need to be snowing to benefit from these amazing tyres, the compound of the rubber gives better traction at lower temperatures.

In 2010 Goodyear won the Auto Express Winter Tyre Test, beating the likes of Pirelli and Continental.

"Some of what Auto Express printed in thier 8 page special"!! What we tested
  • Continental - ContiWinterContact TS830
  • Dunlop SP Winter Sport 3D
  • Goodyear UltraGrip 7+
  • Pirelli Sottozero Winter 210 serie II
  • Nokian WR G2
  • Vredestein Snowtrac 3
  • Vredestein Quatrac 3 (all season tyre)
  • Continental - ContiPremiumContact 2 (summer tyre)

Results in the Snow Tests.

The typical response from drivers to cold weather tyres is that the UK doesn't get enough snow to justify the expense. Yet winter rubber isn't solely for use in snow and ice: it's also effective when temperatures dip below 7 degrees Celsius. Unseasonal warm weather during our trials meant we couldn't conduct our test. Instead, we asked Continental to measure the difference on its wet breaking strip. With the temperature above 7 degrees, the summer tyre stopped soonest from 50mph, in 35.4 metres. The WinterContact pattern needed 38.7m and the all season Quatrac 39.7m. However, below 3 degrees, the winter tyre actually improved to 38.4m. The all season rubber needed an additional 70cm, while the summer pattern required nearly 6m more. On the frozen lake in Sweden, we also wanted to see how much cornering grip each design generated by using a g-meter in a slalom test. No surprise that the winter pattern was the best, but the all season wasn't far behind. Shockingly, the summer rubber generated only 40%of the winter tyre's grip. UK roads would be a lot safer if we all had double the cornering grip in the snow.
